Is the upper trim on a Fairlane 500 front fender different than the other models with the gold insert? I bought a set on e-bay for my 500 and the upper trim is shaped wrong and the gold insert is too wide at the front end.

Yes there is two different trim pieces. Sounds like you got trim for a 1957 Ford Custom 300. The upper moulding and the gold finish panel are different. The lower moulding is the same for both cars.
